Chinese 5 Spice Recipe

This recipe is from my friend Amy. She uses five Chinese spices to make the pork ribs irresistibly appealing. I'm privileged to post her recipe here.

All the pictures are provided by her. Her recipe was originally in Chinese. I did the translation.

For the amount used in this recipe, they are estimated because they are vague in the original recipe. For example, she used "one big spoon" or "one small spoon" as the measure words. I translated them into "one tablespoon" and "two teaspoons" respectively because Chinese people like to use their daily spoon as measuring tools.

For this reason, please have an attitude of experiment when you use this Chinese 5 Spice recipe. I'll update it when I find the accurate measurements. The dish is worth being posted here. I couldn't get enough of it when Amy served it.

Main Ingredients:

Pork ribs -- About one pound

Marinating Ingredients:

  • Cooking wine -- 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar -- 2 teaspoons
  • Salt -- 1 teaspoon
  • Chinese five-spice powder -- 2 teaspoons
  • Cornstarch -- 1 tablespoon

Sauce ingredients:Chinese five Spice Recipe

  • Garlic cloves -- 3, minced
  • Chili powder -- 2 teaspoons
  • Soysauce -- 1 tablespoon
  • Vinegar -- 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar -- 1 tablespoon
  • Salt -- 1 teaspoon
  • Water -- 1 cup


White seasame seeds. Fry on low heat or bake till crispy.


Directions:Chinese 5 Spice Recipe

  1. Wash the pork ribs and mix the marinating ingredients.
  2. Marinate pork ribs with the marinating mix.
  3. Mix the sauce ingredients.
  4. Heat the oil in a wok on medium to high heat until hot. Fry the pork until the ribs have a golden color. Take the pork ribs out and drain the extra oil.
  5. Take most of the oil from the wok, leaving a small amount. Pour the sauce mix in and heat on high heat until it boils.
  6. Add the pork ribs then turn the heat to low until the ribs are soft.
  7. Take out the ribs and sprinkle the white seasame seeds on top.
  8. Serve and ENJOY!
